Dr Courttia Newland has published ten works of fiction including his debut, The Scholar. His novel, The Gospel According to Cane, was published in 2013. Courttia’s latest novel, A River Called Time was published by Canongate in 2021 as well as a collection of speculative fiction stories, Cosmogramma.

Courttia’s short stories have appeared in many anthologies, broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and included in Best of British Short Stories 2017. He has been awarded the Tayner Barbers Award for science fiction writing and the Roland Rees Bursary for playwriting. His latest novel was nominated for an Arthur C. Clarke award.

Courttia has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Westminster where he was previously an Associate Lecturer. As a screenwriter, he has written two films for the Steve McQueen BBC series, Small Axe, of which Lovers Rock was jury selected for Cannes, and was selected to open the New York Film Festival in 2020.

A superb and vividly realised collection of speculative short stories, Cosmogramma explores themes of freedom, society and oppression in a variety of strange and troubling future worlds.

A River Called Time

Set in an alternate world where slavery and colonialism never happened, A River Called Time is at once a timely exploration of social inequality and a story about love and the search for the truth.

The Scholar

When his dad dies under police arrest after a pub brawl, Cory goes to live with his cousin, Sean. Having entered a world of (apparently) easy money and hard drugs, Sean finds it increasingly hard to return to his previous life as ‘the Scholar’.
