Reflections of Me: Art & Poetry Book by Kirsty Latoya

We’re delighted to reveal that we have acquired Reflections of Me, an art and poetry book by 26-year-old emerging artist Kirsty Latoya, from South London.

The book will be made up of four sections – mental health, identity, womanhood and love – and images will be accompanied by original poems from the artist.

Whilst studying in New York, Latoya took the opportunity to take art classes and learn to paint. Using this as a foundation, in December 2014 Latoya taught herself digital art using an iPad and stylus by experimenting with different apps and programs. Not long after, she ditched the stylus, preferring the freedom of drawing on the iPad with her finger which is how Kirsty now creates all her art pieces.

Latoya’s passion to explore mental health through her art comes from her own battles with mental health – having first suffered with depression at the age of 13 – and a desire to help others who suffer with mental health feel less alone and more connected through art.

Latoya has also been very outspoken for the need to de-stigmatise mental health especially amongst Black and Asian communities who are statistically less likely to ask for help when suffering from mental health problems.

Publisher Crystal Mahey-Morgan said: “Kirsty’s ability to convey emotion through her art and affect the viewer in a profound way is truly breath taking. She has a unique ability to express complex ideas through seemingly simple images around universal human emotion. This coupled with her boldness in tackling sometime sensitive issues makes her a truly exciting artist and one to watch. We’re very proud to be able to work with and publish such an important voice and talent.”

OWN IT! has acquired English print, translation, digital, multi-media and film and TV rights worldwide and will publish Reflections of Me in September 2018

New Book Cover for ‘Prisoner to the Streets’

To celebrate the publication of Robyn Travis’ debut novel, MAMA CAN’T RAISE NO MAN (October 2016), OWN IT! is publishing a new edition of his first book PRISONER TO THE STREETS (originally published by The X-Press in 2013). Available from June 6th 2016, the new edition has been re-edited and given a brand new cover, revealed for the first time here.

PRISONER TO THE STREETS is a raw, honest and uncompromising reflection of Robyn’s life ‘on road’ and explores the perils of being a young black man in inner-city London, growing up between Tottenham and Hackney. Touching, at times uncomfortable to read but ultimately inspiring and uplifting, PRISONER TO THE STREETS offers a rare glimpse into an underground world. A world where disputes were settled with violence. Where familiar faces from childhood became bitter enemies in war, and misguided pride led to devastating consequences.

“We were in prisons the size of our boroughs and each estate felt like a different prison wing. The joke is we thought we owned the streets. We thought we were free.”

Prisoner to the Streets became an underground classic and garnered much support from Robyn’s peers and community. With such a powerful message from a man who almost used up all 9 lives before he even hit 17 years of age, it’s little wonder it received such wide spread praise.

“This Book changed my perspective on gangs” – Russell Brand

“Everyone should read this” – Wretch 32

You can get your copy of PRISONER TO THE STREETS here and all orders will receive free shipping. It will also be available in all good physical and online/digital shops.

MAMA CAN’T RAISE NO MAN, Robyn’s debut novel will be published in October 2016 with a special book launch at Hackney Empire. More information and jacket reveal coming soon. Line up for Hackney Empire event to be announced shortly (after which tickets will go on sale).
