ABOUT THE BOOK

Jean starts at a new school and struggles to fit in. He develops an unlikely friendship with rowdy class mate James, who gets him into a string of sticky situations; fights, theft, and more. At home, his parents, Mami and Papa, who fled political violence in Congo under the dictatorial regime of Le Marechal, to seek asylum as refugees – which Jean and his star-student little sister, Marie, have no knowledge of – pressure him to focus on school and sort his act out. Jean is then suspended, and Marie, who usually gets on his nerves, helps him keep his secret, which draws them closer together.

As the family attempts to integrate and navigate modern British society, as well as hold on to their roots and culture, they meet Tonton, a sapeur, womaniser, alcohol-loving, party enthusiast, who, much to Papa’s dislike, after losing his job, moves in with them. Tonton introduces the family – via his church where colourful characters such as Pastor Kaddi, Patricia and Nadege congregate – to a familiar community of fellow country-people, making them feel slightly less alone. They begin to settle, but the reality of their situation unravels a threat to their future, whilst the fear of uncertainty remains.

With colourful characters and luminous prose, No Place To Call Home is a tale of belonging, identity and immigration, of hope and hopelessness, of loss –not by death, but by distance– and, by no means the least, of love.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

JJ BOLA is a Kinshasa born, London raised writer, poet, educator and workshop facilitator. He performs regularly at shows and festivals around the world. JJ Bola’s work is centred on a narrative of empowerment, humanisation, healing of trauma as well as discovery of self through art, literature and poetry. He believes that the true purpose of art is to expose the reality of this world and how to, most importantly, survive it. No place To Call Home is JJ Bola’s debut novel.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Moments of Significance is a non-linear narrative packed with poetry, prose, fragments of memories and mediations on life, philosophy and politics from an uncompromising voice. Told through Shauna’s personal experiences of growing up on an inner-city London council estate as a white Working Class Queer woman, Moments of Significance is an exploration of society and the political told through a very personal collage of experiences.

With accounts from Shauna’s childhood poverty to the devastating family revelation in Ireland; being bullied on her estate for being a Lesbian to finding Buddhism, coping with the death of her mother to piecing together an identity through hip hop, poetry and art, Shauna reinvents the way memoirs are written and through this collection of life moments reveals layers of herself to slowly build a unique relationship with the reader.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MC Angel is a talented wordsmith performing as a spoken word artist and hip hop emcee as well as writing page poetry. She has been filmed by Red Bull TV, BBC3 and Channel 4 for the “Women in Hip Hop” project. She’s appeared on BBC 1xtra Live Lounge as part of their spoken word season and has performed up and down the country at festivals including Latitude, Secret Garden Party and Drop Beats Not Bombs. She is currently the resident MC for Morning Gloryville, a sober movement which has seen her share the stage with the likes of Fat Boy Slim and Basement Jaxx.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jill Johnson has lived in South East Asia, Europe and New Zealand. She has owned an editorial cartoon gallery, a comic shop and has been involved in a graphic novel publishing house and now lives in London with her children. The Time Before The Time To Come is inspired by her Maori heritage.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

DON’T BE ALIEN is a digital book which weaves together lyrics, music and animation to create a multi-layered way to experience the story within a song, and a song within a book, offering a truly immersive experience.

It’s the story of two people once desperately in love but now distant strangers. One day a chance encounter prompts a montage of memories…

The book also includes a behind the scenes ‘making of’ story which gives readers a fascinating insight into how this animated songbook was created. Features include unpublished sketches, character turnaround boards, ‘storyboard to final film’ videos and insightful commentary from the animator and illustrator, Ewan Green

ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS

Call Me Unique is known for her eclectic and soulful sound which fuses together elements from a wide variety of artists and influences including Jill Scott, Billie Holiday, Lisa Lopes, Lauryn Hill and Ella Fitzgerald. Named by Time Out Magazine as an upcoming talent to watch out for, Unique regularly performs across the country and can regularly be heard coming through your radio airwaves.

Cuba was part of influential London Hiphop Group, 12 Stone Productions who were together for 10 years before deciding to go their separate ways in 2004. Even though one chapter in his musical journey came to an end, Cuba’s passion to create music never left him and in 2010 he decided to learn to play the piano. Now a songwriter and composer, Cuba has always believed that regardless of style, music is music and this has taken his songwriting in a whole new direction.

Ewan graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2009 with a first in  Animation in the School of Design. He has since contributed work to two feature  films, including: Titeuf: le Film (2010), and L’Illusioniste (2010). In 2012, he  went  to Jeju island in South Korea to teach English, and spent his time there  drawing  the landscape, as well as working on his personal project, current title: ‘Far From Home’. He can usually be found in a coffee shop with a sketchbook in front of him.

The Group Therapy Programme – A Multi-Media Book/Song/Film Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We are delighted to launch The Group Therapy Programme: (Interpersonal Learning) – a multi-media project which tells the story of a fictional therapy session where a group of characters share how they are feeling through animated songs threaded together through an intra-animation.

The project is a creative collaboration between an eclectic mix of talented artists including a songwriter, 5 illustrators, 4 singers and 3 animators who together bring the lyrics of the songs and the overall story to life.

The Group Therapy Programme is available to experience in a number of ways including the film, a multi-media digital book with the lyrics, music, art and animation as well as  ‘behind the scenes’ extras from the contributors. It is also available as a stand alone music EP.

ANIMATORS/ILLUSTRATORS

Caroline is an American illustrator based in Paris. She lives in Montmartre with her husband and two children. Prior to switching to illustration, she worked for over ten years as a footwear designer for brands around the world, including adidas and Converse. She is currently working on a graphic novel set in Portland during the 1960s, and due to come out early next year.

Daniela Villegas Skinner is a 28 year old artist currently living and working in Southsea, UK. Born in Colombia and raised in Miami, USA, she trained as an animator and art historian at the Kansas City Art Institute. Daniela finished her art history studies in Paris, France. Daniela is particularly interested in our relationship with the human form and working with different textures and line work. She uses repetitive lines to bring a visual rhythm to her work.

There’s always a narrative behind Ellen’s illustrations. She draws inspiration from many places from her imagination, to bits of conversation overheard, to people and places, to books that she has read. Ellen purposefully keeps her images open to interpretation, providing just enough imagination for the spectator to make their own story. She grew up in Hertfordshire and then moved to Cardiff where Ellen gained a 1st class degree in illustration at Cardiff School of Art and Design. She has been living and working in London since 2012.

SINGERS

AJ Lewis is a british singer and songwriter who has collaborated with various music producers internationally. AJ has starred in London’s West End and internationally in shows such as ‘Soul Train’, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, ‘Dancing in the streets’, ‘Blues Brothers’, ‘Show Boat’, ‘Bernstein’s Mass’, ‘Porgy and Bess’.  He was also the lead singer in the hit Michael Jackson show ‘Thriller Live’.

Amy is a self taught pianist, composer and singer from London who has loved music for as long as she can remember. She has written, performed and produced soundtracks for a number of short films and documentaries and has collaborated with a various artists, producers and writers.

Dee Ajaye’s luring voice and addictive stage presence captivates her audience. Live work has seen Dee Ajayi alongside Stormzy, Krept and Konan, Nick Brewer and more. Described as ‘up in the clouds’, Dee is noticeably in her own world of infinite energy.

Like many vocalists, Sharon Rose found her voice in church choirs and on school stages at a very young age. But a voice is best used when it expresses the passion of the singer, and at 27, Sharon is brimming with a fiery passion for her music.

SONGWRITER
